Hands-on review of the Samsung Q80R HDR TV.
The Samsung Q80R is an excellent 4k LED TV with impressive picture quality. It delivers deep blacks thanks to the high native contrast ratio, excellent black uniformity, and very good local dimming support. In this review, we compare it to 3 other popular models.
Full review:
The Q80R is a very bright TV with a wide color gamut that delivers HDR content with rich colors and highlights that pop. It has decent viewing angles, despite being a VA panel TV, thanks to the ‘Ultra Viewing Angle’ technology. The TV has remarkable motion handling and produces crisp motion with minimal blur. It has a very low input lag and supports FreeSync for more consistent motion during gaming.
Model tested: 55” (QN55Q80R)
Should also be valid for the 65” (QN65Q80R) and 75” (QN75Q80R)

Since filming this video, an 82" model of the Q80R has been released (QN82Q80R). We haven't tested this larger size, but expect it to offer similar performance.
What does Samsung provide for watch free?
I was in BBY today ready to buy a Samsung Q80R 75" and the guy showed me the Sony X900F 75"… I'm on the fence on which one. Seemed like the Sony had a better picture and it was only $1800 compared to Samsung $2300 price tag… I'm completely stumped now which one to get. One of these is replacing our 12 year old 47" Visio…
Got this TV on sale for $2,200 Black Friday week, looking forward to it. Since I am using it mostly for gaming in a bright room this appealed to my needs. Remember the US version seems to have more advantages over the EU version which is reviewed here. Notably has around 500 nits more and more zones over the EU version.
can someone please explain to me what is local dimming ?
Its this tv 120hz?
Id buy this if it did 4k @ 120hz.
Can i use this tv with a soundbar that has ARC??
Can you tell me what the best in wall power kit is best for this TV. I saw that Samsung’s power cord is shaped so that it doesn’t fit in some of them.
Would you choose the Q8FN over the Q80 because of better colors ?
Which samsung qled series would you recommend. I mainly just watch tv from cable box or Netflix. I do not play games at all or watch movies very often. We do sometimes watch tv with the Captions on. I have seen some videos where you do see the blooming but that was basically just when the captions are on a black background. I would get a 82" q70 or a 75 inch Q80 or Q90. What would be the best all around tv for the money? Recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you
Why do people choose QLED TV over OLED TV? 😏 https://youtu.be/2_EA3VMi-Sg
No dolby vision a concern? Or doesn’t really matter?
Very helpful videos so for hdr colours native or auto
Does anyone know if the EU version is very different from the US version?
My friend just bought 1 today and I got very disappointing with its HDR on the PS4 Pro and no way to change HDR settings on TV on gaming mode which is needed or input lag is just too damn high…
I had a way cheaper old TCL C70 which is far worse than TCL US model and the HDR made a HUGE difference, I remembered uncharted was a day to night difference with the bright parts very bright and the black parts very black and the grass colors very amazing even just in the menu, it didn't even looked like the same game…
I tried the same Uncharted 4 on PS4 Pro with HDR on the Q80 55 inch EU version and it doesn't change much everything is just kinda gray and lifeless just a bit more bright but with low contrast and no way to fix it since brightness was at around 50%, contrast was maxed out which is always the best on the Samsung panels, I have seen very low colors, very gray and with low contrast compared to the cheap normal 49inch TCL C70 LCD but sadly I returned the TCL because like the US model the corners had lot of light bleed and I always play in dark room and horror dark games look like crap with light spots on the black, the Samsung's greatly all I have ever tested have a solid black with almost no light spots visible to the naked eye even though off course it's not ever as black as I wish like OLED, totally love it but I would be very afraid to pay years of savings for 1 and get burn in while playing the same game for the whole day…
NO Dolby Vision Support whihc is a huge deal breaker unfortunately not future proof of your spending 2 k on something
Interesting, Rtings.com still scores a 3.5 year old LG C6 OLED higher than a 2019 Q80R QLED. I had my QLED for less than 6 months before selling it to get an OLED, more than a year on and I'm still blown away by OLED superiority. Check out the comparison: https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/lg-c6-vs-samsung-q80r/400/807?usage=7318&threshold=0.1
this is the best TV
Indian version of Q80R have 'No wall Gap' feature with One-connect box. Refer the below link.
Can you please verify if only the design has changed or else the specs got modified, compared to your review..

I bought the 75 inch Q80R about 2 weeks ago. It's a nice TV but I'm struggling to adapt to it. I was coming from a 12 year old (2007) Samsung 63 inch 1080p plasma panel. To be honest, it's taking my brain a while to accept 4K, HDR, and an LCD panel vs 1080p plasma. It's a little jarring at first and I'm not sure I like the higher resolution upscaled version of all the older content. I wanted a 75" OLED but I didn't want to spend the extra $700 – $1,000. The one place I'd say the 75" QLED screen blows away my old plasma so far is live broadcast of NFL games. Holy Moly, the detail is incredible and the screen brightness is welcome for afternoon games. And after 2 weeks my brain is starting to accept the "new normal" of a 12 year jump forward in technology.
The other stuff I love about this TV is all unrelated to the picture or sound. My old plasma screen was 63", weighed 192 lbs, consumed 600 watts, and cost me $6,000 back in the day. Fast forward 12 years and my 75" Q80 weighs 83 lbs, consumes about 100 watts, and cost me $3,000. That's a 40% increase in screen size, a 57% drop in weight, an 83% reduction in power consumption, and a 50% lower price. The Q80 also has 4 times the resolution, a much wider color gamut, HDR, is impervious to burn in, and can get much brighter to fight daytime reflections. That's some pretty amazing value from technology advancements in a little over a decade. It also looks better from an industrial design standpoint. The plasma panel had a huge black bezel all the way around which added to the bulk without adding any screen real estate. The Q80 has a bezel that's maybe 1/2" all the way around and goes virtually unnoticed. So the new 75" screen is not much bigger overall than the 63" screen it replaced. It looks much nicer mounted on a wall.
This or TCL 8 series?
Need help. I am tossing up between either a 75" q80r or a 65" q90r in Australia right now they are both around the same price. Which should I get, or should i look at something else?
